Case Study: Bespoke Automatic Mains Failure (AMF) Panels
02/11/2026
A tailored power solution, designed and manufactured by KES Power & Light
KES was approached to design and manufacture a pair of bespoke Automatic Mains Failure (AMF) panels to support a customer's power distribution requirements.
The project involved the manufacture of two AMF panels, one rated at 125A and the other at 250A, each housed in a Zintec steel enclosure with a blue painted finish and mounted within a hot-dipped galvanised crash frame.
Designed around the customer's requirements
Following the initial quotation, the customer specified some additional requirements to ensure the panels would operate effectively within their installation.
Both units were supplied with four-pole contactors and associated control relays and timers, incorporating volt-free contacts for automatic generator starting.
An additional 230V 16A socket outlet, protected by an RCBO, was also included on each panel to provide a convenient auxiliary power supply.
One of the key considerations was the transition between mains and generator supplies. The customer had previously experienced issues with rapid switching between power sources, which had caused variable frequency drives (VFDs) to enter fault conditions.
To help address this, the AMF panels incorporate adjustable on-delay timers, initially set to 10 seconds. This allows the customer to increase or decrease the delay to suit their installation and provide greater control over the changeover process.
Bespoke manufacture at KES
Both panels were manufactured to meet the agreed specification, combining robust steel enclosures with protective galvanised crash frames to provide additional physical protection.
The project demonstrates KES's ability to adapt standard power distribution solutions to meet specific customer requirements, from enclosure design and finishing through to electrical components and control functionality.
The finished solution
The completed order comprised:
- 1 x 125A Automatic Mains Failure panel.
- 1 x 250A Automatic Mains Failure panel.
- Blue painted Zintec steel enclosures.
- Hot-dipped galvanised crash frames.
- Four-pole contactors and associated control relays and timers.
- Volt-free contacts for automatic generator starting.
- Adjustable on-delay timers, initially set to 10 seconds.
- 230V 16A auxiliary socket with RCBO protection on each unit.
By working through the customer's additional requirements, KES delivered two bespoke AMF panels designed around the practical demands of their installation.
